Voltage Reduction System
Voltage Reduction System (VRS) is a device that is designed for saving energy through reducing the voltage delivered to specific types of lamps. Metal halide lamps along with some other types of lamps, designed for a specific voltage, will turn on with that voltage but after a determined "Warm-up Period" the voltage delivered to them can be reduced by as much as 50 percent and the light that the lamps produce is only reduced by as little as 10 percent.
My duties in this project included the firmware development of the device and adding network capabilities to the VRS. VRS is a network based device that lets the user customize a recurring weekly schedule for the voltage delivered to the lamps through a web interface. A savings report with customizable subject is sent to the owner's email address daily by the VRS device. Should the VRS device lose its internet connection, it will follow the last set schedule configuration until the connection is restored. It also has a preset warm up period scheduled so that if the power is lost, the lamps have enough time to warm up again before voltage is reduced to save energy.
